State Health Care Fraud Control Unit
Mission:
The Mission of the SHCFCU is to serve the public, to uphold and enforce the law, to investigate and prosecute fraud and abuse by providers in the Georgia Medicaid program, and to protect vulnerable patients from abuse or neglect.
History:
Medicaid, adopted by Congress in 1965, is a program, jointly funded by the State and Federal governments, for providing quality health care to the financially indigent. In the mid-1970’s Congress became aware of the widespread fraud and abuse in the Medicaid program. In 1977, Congress enacted, and President Jimmy Carter signed the Medicaid Anti-Fraud and abuse Amendments of 1977. The objective of the law was to strengthen the capability of the government to detect, investigate, prosecute, and punish individual providers, facilities, and institutions for health care fraud. Funded in part by a Federal grant issued under those statutes, the Georgia Health Care Fraud Control Unit was created as part of the effort to combat fraud and abuse by providers in the Georgia Medicaid program.
